Anxiety, Confusion, Fear, … and Comfort!

So…. here we are, inside our homes. These are uncertain times. We’re not sure of what’s coming or what might happen. We don’t even know if our job will still be here in the next few weeks, or if we’ll be able to find a job if it’s already gone. Our children can’t play with their friends or go to school. Everyone is feeling the impact of the virus.

It makes me wonder if, in some way, this is how the disciples must have felt when Jesus was led away, whipped and nailed upon the cross. Their world was torn apart. Everything they thought they knew, what they were used to, was gone! They were huddled together out of fear of what would happen to them. They were even worried they might be killed.

In a matter of hours and days, it seemed they had forgotten many of Jesus’s teachings…

But then what happened? Jesus returned! He appeared and said, “peace be with you “. Then in John 20:21-22 he said to them again, “Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, I also send you.” After saying this, he breathed on them and said, “Receive the Holy Spirit.” Jesus fulfilled what he said again, as he had many other times. He comforted them and renewed them.

Through these times of uncertainty we have to remember that we are not alone. God is here with us. He reminds us that while we may feel that our world is turned upside down and we don’t know what’s going to happen, he’s still here for us.

I’m reminded of the poem “Footprints in the Sand”…

One night I dreamed a dream.
As I was walking along the beach with my Lord.
Across the dark sky flashed scenes from my life.
And for each scene I noticed two sets of footprints in the sand,
One belonging to me and one to my Lord.
After the last scene of my life flashed before me,
I looked back at the footprints in the sand.
I noticed that at many times along the path of my life,
especially at the very lowest and saddest times,
there was only one set of footprints.
This really troubled me, so I asked the Lord about it.
“Lord, you said once I decided to follow you,
You’d walk with me all the way.
But I noticed that during the saddest
and most troublesome times of my life,
there was only one set of footprints.
I don’t understand why, when I needed You the most,
You would leave me.”
He whispered, “My precious child,
I love you and will never leave you
Never, ever, during your trials and testings.
When you saw only one set of footprints,
It was then that I carried you.”

God is there for us in times of need! Psalm 46:1 tells us, “God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble.”

Amen! Blessings to you all.
