Lift Up

“I am the true vine, and My Father is the vinedresser. Every branch in Me that does not bear fruit He takes away; and every branch that bears fruit He prunes, that it may bear more fruit.”

All my life i was taught that he cuts off and gets rid of every branch that bears no fruit. The actual Greek word for takes away (αἵρει) can also mean lifts up. I began to think about what this could mean.

Vineyards would often be surrounded by stone walls and have towers. These served the purpose of keeping watch over the vineyards to help protect from animals and enemies. The whole life of the vineyard depended on safety and fruitfulness. They would watch from the tower and also walk in the vineyard daily. They would prune the vines so that they could produce more fruit. Some vines that were not doing well would be cut off and thrown away. However some vines that were not doing well could be saved so the gardener would lift them up so that get better light. Maybe put then on the wall. The gardener was knowledgeable as to what was best.

All of us have had times in our life when we were not producing fruit. God didn’t throw us away. He was there and lifted us up so that we could bear fruit. He is there for us at all times we just have to have hope, faith, and trust in Him. The parable of the lost sheep exemplifies this. He loves us so much that He would leave the other 99 sheep for the one that is lost.

There is a line in the chorus of “You Say” by Lauren Daigle that says this.

“And You say I am held when I am falling short”.

Our identity is found in God. What He thinks is what is important. No matter what we go through, no matter how we feel, when we are falling short … He never give up on us and is there to lift us up.

Here are the full lyrics to “You Say”

I keep fighting voices in my mind that say I’m not enough
Every single lie that tells me I will never measure up
Am I more than just the sum of every high and every low?

Remind me once again just who I am, because I need to know, You say I am loved when I can’t feel a thing
You say I am strong when I think I am weak
And You say I am held when I am falling short
And when I don’t belong, oh, You say I am Yours
And I believe (I), oh, I believe (I)
What You say of me (I)
I believe The only thing that matters now is everything You think of me
In You I find my worth, in You I find my identity, You say I am loved when I can’t feel a thing
You say I am strong when I think I am weak
And You say I am held when I am falling short
When I don’t belong,…
