One of the things I like to do as I read the scriptures is write down just one thing, one quick takeaway from the section. For me, it’s a process that helps me move from simply reading the Word to allowing the Word to read me.
It’s a simple practice that anybody can do, it helps to reinforce what I’ve read, and it gives me an opportunity to engage with what the Holy Spirit might be trying to teach me.
This is my “quick thought” from today’s reading in Luke 7-8.
“‘Young man,’ he said, ‘I tell you, get up.’” ~Luke 7:14
You are worthy of Life because Jesus said so!
Jesus came to bring Life, and Jesus literally brings life for two families in Luke 7.
Yes Life, Jesus came to bring Life! Not just physical or biological life as if we were zoo animals or lab experiments. He came to bring full life lived in community with the Triune God and with all of creation!
Regardless of what the world thinks of you, Jesus came to bring Life. You may be well respected with great potential like the Roman Officer, or you may be a widow who just lost all financial and social hope for the future, still Jesus brings Life. You may be a cog in a brutal system like the Roman Officer, or you may be living under the oppression of an uncompromising religious and political system like the widow, still Jesus brings Life.
You may think yourself unworthy of Life like both the officer and the widow, but Jesus declares all of us more than worthy as he gives Life to all!
Whoever you are, you are worthy of Life because Jesus said so!
This is what I heard in today’s reading, what did you hear?
