One of the things I like to do as I read the scriptures is write down just one thing, one quick takeaway from the section. For me, it’s a process that helps me move from simply reading the Word to allowing the Word to read me.
It’s a simple practice that anybody can do, it helps to reinforce what I’ve read, and it gives me an opportunity to engage with what the Holy Spirit might be trying to teach me.
This is my “quick thought” from today’s reading in Proverbs 17-18.
“Fire tests the purity of silver and gold, but the Lord tests the heart.” ~Proverbs 17:3
Do you know how valued you are?
We may think we have the ability to increase or decrease our “value” with our actions, but that would be an evaluation limited by the worldly structures we’ve created and not in line with what the Lord declares.
We are so highly valued that our hearts are thoroughly tested by the Lord, and the results of our testing were disastrous. We had nothing to offer, we were dead, and we were suffering from a spiritual death that leads to a physical death. Anyone who’s dead has no ability to increase or decrease their value, but at just the right time God demonstrated his love for us by paying the ultimate price, his own life!
He tested our hearts, found us dead, and still gave everything? Sometimes I’m confused by why he’d pay so high a price for me, but it doesn’t matter how I feel about my value. It only matters what God was willing to pay, and he declared our value to be far greater than anything in all creation.
“Value” is a funny thing. An object being bought and sold doesn’t dictate or control it’s own value, the creator does. We lack the ability to value ourselves, others and all of creation correctly when we look at it from our low worldly perspective, but when we see all through the heart of the Creator, we are overwhelmed by the beauty, and any evaluation of “value” becomes nothing more than a trite juvenile debate. He created us, he knows us thoroughly, he loves us deeply, and no amount of gold, silver, or diamonds could compare to our value.
We are highly valued by the God of all creation! The devine reality is, nothing is worth more than our souls, and without hesitation God gave his everything for us the way any good parent would trade their everything for a beloved child. In this way, God values us not for what we can do, but rather for who we are, his beloved children!
Our value is far greater than gold, his testing is more thorough than fire, and I am grateful to be called his “Beloved Child.”
This is what I heard in today’s reading, what did you hear?
