Quick Thought Thursday: It Is Written

This is my “quick thought” from today’s reading in Matthew 3-4.

“Jesus answered, ‘It is written: …’” ~Matthew 4:4

Before Jesus’ public ministry began, back when everyone assumed he was just a carpenter’s son destined to follow in his father’s footsteps, Jesus was learning what “is written!”

Now, he’s in a time of difficulty. He went to the wilderness to fast, pray, and prepare for his upcoming 3 years of ministry. This might be one of the last few times of peaceful solitude he’d experience and yet, he’s confronted with temptations. His peace is aggressively interrupted, and Jesus’ response, “it is written: …”

Jesus doesn’t ignore temptations or difficulties. He doesn’t turn a blind eye to struggles, hoping they dissolve into the noise of everyday life. Instead, even though he’s tired and hungry, he confidently says “it is written: …” He’s done the work, he knows who he is, he knows what is written, and he knows how to apply it!

Do I know what is written? Has it saturated my soul? Do I continue to humbly interact with the words of God, considering what I might have missed? Do I pray for understanding? Do I pray for empathy? Do I pray that the Lord would give me ears to hear and eyes to see? Am I doing all of this continually? Being consistently consistent with this was important for Jesus, and it should be important for us because in the times of difficulty, it’s too late to learn how to apply “what is written.”

This is what I heard in today’s reading, what do you hear?
