Quick Thought Thursday: Those People Too?

This is my “quick thought” from today’s reading in Matthew 5-7.

“But I tell you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you,” ~Matthew 5:44

Wait, what, those people? Love those people? Those people! They want to embarrass me, they want my job, they’re red, they’re blue, they’re obnoxious, they wish and work towards my death. Those people!!

God is love. Not just on Sunday morning, but every day from before time and into the infinite eternity, God is love. If this isn’t true everywhere, then it isn’t true anywhere! It’s not a selective truth, we don’t get to pick and choose when or where God is true.

Either the “Beatitudes” are true everyday or they aren’t true any day. Either we are called to be Salt & Light for the world everywhere, at all times, and in every circumstance, or it’s just a fairytale that plays well on Sunday morning. But it’s not a fairytale, it’s true, Jesus lived it, he embodies it, and he calls all of us to follow his way to truth and life.

So yes, those people! Love those people until it kills you, or until “those people” become your people. Or maybe entertain the radical thought … love “those people” until others criticize you for spending too much time with those people, that’s exactly what happened to Jesus!

God loved us so much that he became one of us! God showed us the full extent of his love by washing the feet of those who would betray and deny him, and then dying at the hands of those who believed themselves to be his enemies. He did this because those people are His people; those people are us!

This is what I heard in today’s reading, what do you hear?
