Quick Thought Thursday: Maturity & Wisdom are Lifeless Apart from Jesus

This is my “quick thought” from today’s reading in Matthew 14-16.

“‘Lord, if it’s you,’ Peter replied, ‘tell me to come to you on the water.’” ~Matthew 14:28

What was Peter thinking! The “wise” of the world whisper, “be sensible you fool; nobody recklessly leaves the boat.” The relentless voices of the mature laugh, “what good will come of this; you’ll never change the world!” The disapproving shake their heads and wait with baited breath for the inevitable moment when they can delight in their favorite phrase: “I told you so!“

But it wasn’t Peter’s style to burdened himself with the concerns of others; he didn’t have time for the handwringing fools who find contentment with a life walled in by their security; he was focused on Jesus! After all, Jesus created the world, why wouldn’t he be able to create the abundant feast they just served to 5000 people? He created Hydrogen and Oxygen, and than bounded them together, why wouldn’t he be able to walk, run, or dance among the waves if he wanted?

If it was Jesus, Peter knew where he wanted to be … following wherever He may call! Peter was far from perfect, his shortcomings are well documented, but his passion to follow Jesus was unparalleled, and he understood one thing: “maturity and wisdom” are lifeless apart from Jesus!

There is more maturity and wisdom in responding to the God of the Universe when he calls his beloved children to “come.” Are we relentlessly following Jesus wherever he leads?

This is what I heard in today’s reading, what do you hear?
