This is my “quick thought” from today’s reading in Matthew 26-28.
“My Father, if it is possible, may this cup be taken from me. Yet not as I will, but as you will.” ~Matthew 26:39
“My” Father … even in the midst of deep grief, and overwhelming anxiety, the Trinity remains. Even when his sweat fell to the ground like drops of blood, the Trinity is one. Even knowing Judas would soon arrive, and the God of the universe would be rejected, condemned by his creation … even then, Jesus remains in oneness with the Father and the Spirt.
When Jesus declared He was “one” with the Father, they wanted to stone Him. Now it’s about to happen, the Triune God would be judged by the world. It wasn’t just Jesus’ “cup” to drink, it wasn’t just one third of God who came to display his love for the world. It was all of God feeling the pain, the temptation, the grief, the anxiety, and it is all of God who loves us to the ends of eternity.
The bitter “cup” being consumed, was the “cup” the Trinity consumed to fully display the self-giving love of God.
This is what I heard in today’s reading, what do you hear?
