This is my “quick thought” from today’s reading in Mark 5-6.
“King Herod heard about this, for Jesus’ name had become well known.” ~Mark 6:14
There is so much in this chapter that it is difficult to focus on only one thing for a post! How do you choose between John the Baptist getting executed, Jesus feeding a crowd of people, and Jesus walking on water?
Still, it fascinates me that King Herod “heard” about Jesus’ name. If you read the several verses prior to 14 you see that Jesus’ disciples were the ones preaching, teaching, & healing. In this instance, King Herod heard about Jesus because of the amazing accomplishments of Jesus’ disciples, not because of the things Jesus had done!
Obviously, the credit stills goes back to Jesus who sent them out and gave them authority, but how tempting would it have been for the disciples to take credit for themselves? Instead, it’s Jesus’ name that is lifted up in their actions, not their own.
It makes me wonder, whose name is represented in my life, and what reputation is it gaining?
This is what I heard in today’s reading, what did you hear?
