Quick Thought Thursday: Let My Words Be Few

This is my “quick thought” from today’s reading in Mark 7-8.

“You have eyes, can’t you see? You have ears, can’t you hear? Don’t you remember anything at all?” ~Mark 8:18

Help! Lord, help me silence my words so I can hear your words of life!

My words compared to Jesus, the “Word of God in flesh,” should be few. But, of course I struggle with this, even Jesus’ disciples struggled with this!

In Mark’s Gospel, after Jesus already feed 5000 and 4000 people on separate occasions, they argued about not having enough food for themselves. Jesus’ response to their petty argument: “You have eyes, can’t you see? You have ears, can’t you hear? Don’t you remember anything at all?”

They saw the miracle, they participated in the miracle, and I’m sure they spoke about the miracle, but in the midst of all their words they never “saw or heard” the truth of the true Miracle … Jesus, God in flesh, is the source of all Life, he longs to share life with us, and he invites us to participate in life with him!

Lord, help! When I am drowning in my words and worries, help me to not only hear your words of life, but also follow and participate with them. Help me spend more time listening and less time petitioning. When I engage with your word, Help me learn the difficult act of being “quick to listen and slow to speak.”

Lord, give me the wisdom to build my life on a foundation of your words, and not my own!

This is what I heard in today’s reading, what did you hear?
