This is my “quick thought” from today’s reading in Luke 1-2.
“… they were handed down to us by those who from the first were eyewitnesses and servants of the word.” ~Luke 1:2
There are few things more valuable to investigators than reliable eyewitnesses. The canonized Gospels in the Bible are based on the accounts of reliable eyewitnesses and Luke reminds us of this right from the beginning.
These are not fairytales, rumors, or bedtime stories. We are not talking about the Tooth Fairy, the Bogeyman, or the Man in the Moon. We are talking about real, historical events, with real people, who existed in real time, in an actual location, and had verifiable encounters with Jesus!
The Gospels are littered with “eyewitnesses,” and they were written at a time when anybody could have asked the eyewitnesses for their account. Remember the eyewitness who carried the cross for Jesus, “Simon, from Cyrene, the father of Alexander and Rufus (Mark 15:21)? It’s as if Mark is saying, go talk to Simon about the experience, go talk to his sons, they live in Cyrene, they can verify the account. It’s real, it’s all real!
This is what I heard in today’s reading, what did you hear?
