This is my “quick thought” from today’s reading in Luke 7-8.
“When the Lord saw her, his heart went out to her and he said, ‘Don’t cry.'” ~Luke 7:13
The heart of Jesus is always on the move, it’s always “going out!” Here’s a widow who’s lost so much: her husband, her community, her economic stability, her hope for the future, her only son, her “everything.” She had much to grieve, but Jesus has the audacity to say “Don’t cry” because even though death and loss seems to prevail, Jesus is the one who infects death with Life!
I wonder if Jesus saw this women and thought of his own mother, and what she too would soon be grieving?
The widow Mary, the mother of Jesus, would soon lose her eldest son to public disgrace and a brutal execution. She would soon be overcome with unimaginable grief only to be surprised by the unimaginable wonder of Life. Life that wouldn’t just infect the death of a widow’s son, but Life that would infect the death in all creation!
Jesus’ heart went out to the widow, his mother, and to all of us so that when we grieve, it is with the assurance of Life.
This is what I heard in today’s reading, what did you hear?
